Utopia in Four Movements revisited

Utopia in Four Movements was a multimedia "live documentary" by Sam Green and Dave Cerf. It was presented at various venues around the country and abroad, including the American Film Institute's Silverdocs Documentary Festival in Silver Spring, Maryland (just outside of Washington, DC) on June 26, 2010. (See my blog entry on this performance.) This "live documentary" included film clips, narration, and live music. Is there any video of one of these performances as a whole? I do not know. Here are a few fragments on video.

Idiot's Delight, Esperanto, & Hollywood's collusion with fascism

The use of Esperanto in cinema has been discussed, for example: Esperanto and Cinema. One example, which has been documented in various places, is the film Idiot's Delight. (The Esperanto version of the Wikipedia article does not give an adequate explanation for the use of Esperanto in the film).  In a recent historical work, the political context is outlined:

Throughout the film industry's relatively brief existence, moviemakers—protective of their profits and worried about private pressure groups and government censorship—had done their best to avoid controversy. They were particularly concerned about not offending important foreign markets, which accounted for at least half their annual revenues. In the 1930s, Germany and Italy were key outlets for American movies, and studio heads were reluctant to do anything that might anger those countries' totalitarian leaders.

Robert Sherwood was made aware of that fact when his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Idiot's Delight, was optioned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1936. Both antiwar and anti-Fascist, Idiot’s Delight, set in a small Italian hotel on the Swiss border, focuses on a disparate group of international travelers who are stranded when Italy launches a surprise air raid on Paris. To avoid annoying Italy, the head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer, ordered the story's setting changed to an unnamed country whose inhabitants spoke Esperanto instead of Italian. There also was to be no mention of Fascism. The Italian consul in Los Angeles was given final script approval, and MGM previewed the film for representatives of the Italian government.

When Sherwood, who wrote the screenplay, was asked if he had had any collaborators, he ruefully replied, "Yes—Mussolini." Expurgated and defanged, Idiot's Delight was roundly panned by the critics when it was finally released in early 1939. And despite all MGM's efforts to placate Italian sensibilities, Italy ended up banning it, as did Spain, France, Switzerland, and Estonia.

Sam Green estas amiko de Esperanto. Plue, kiam mi petis pli da dokumentado pri la filmĉerpaĵoj kaj fotografoj prezentitaj en liaj filmoj, li komplezis. Li donas pluajn informojn kaj fontojn en sia blogo pri la filmo. Do li ja volas helpi Esperanton. Tamen, la akra kritiko de Jim Ryan estas la pli ĝusta takso. La dokumenta filmo de Green estas disorda, nekohera, miskompreniga, kaj finfine nesufiĉe dokumenta, malgraŭ la raraj, nemalhaveblaj malnovaj filmetoj kaj fotografoj el la plej drameca epoko de la Esperanto-movado antaŭ la Dua Mondmilito.

Green malŝparas tempon kaj rimedojn pri portretoj de strange pozitaj esperantistaj kongresanoj, ne nur en la filmo mem, sed en la kromsuplementoj. Aparte en la aldona materialo, estus preferinde doni plenajn dokumentajn materialojn–malnovajn filmojn, fotografojn, ktp. kun fontindikoj kaj sugestoj por plua esplorado. Oni povus montri ankaŭ polurita(j)n deklamo(j)n de poemoj originalaj kaj/aŭ tradukaj.

Dokumentfilmo estu ne nur hazarda kolekto da impresoj sed vere historie informita kaj informiva, kun kohera historia perspektivo. La historia sento ĉi-kaze estas domaĝe misa, dankon al la nekompetenta ligigo de la Esperanto-movado kun diktatoreco, ekz. stalinismo, fare de Arika Okrent,  kiu estas lingvisto sed nek historiisto nek sociteoriisto.

La recenzo de Corsetti estas stultaĵo. Li laŭdas la filmon kiel realisman, montrante la esperantistojn kiel ili estas, sen polurigo de la makuloj kaj strangaĵoj. Kaj ja li mem estas esperantista kultisto kaj finvenkisto, sed la filmo fakte ne donas realisman bildon. Se jes, ĝi montrus diversajn, eĉ kontraŭajn perspektivojn pri la movado kaj la esperantistaro, preter reva idealismo, strangeco, kaj nostalgio al fiaskinta utopiaĵo.

Fakte mi tre ŝatas Sam Green kaj kunsentas lian emon rigardi retroen al la epoko de la 20a jarcento kun komparo al la mondorda situacio nuna. Sed percepteblas ankaŭ diferenco inter generacioj lia (postmalvarmmilita) kaj mia (malvarmmilita), el kiuj oni spektas aŭ spertas la epokojn ekz. de la 1930-40aj jaroj, la 1960-70aj jaroj, aŭ la 1980aj kaj postaj jaroj.

Graham Greene & Esperanto (7): Confidential Agent (film) revisited

I already blogged about the film Confidential Agent (1945, 118 min.) and posted the trailer along with it. (For more information on the film see the IMDb site.)

For the novel Graham Greene created the character Dr. Bellows, naive creator of the artificial international language Entrenationo. You can find the video clip featuring Entrenatio and a few others here:

Dr. Bellows, the naive inventor of this language, has no idea that his institute serves as a dangerous meeting ground for international intrigue and a life-and-death struggle.

In the novel, Greene creates an effective portrayal of an artificial language movement completely ineffective and oblivious to the real dangers of the world. Greene probably saw a parallel between Bellows/Entrenationo and Zamenhof/Esperanto. And while Esperantists have often parodied their own foolishness, and in some cases have criticized Zamenhof's political limitations, Zamenhof was no Bellows, and some Esperantists were politically astute, including those who fought fascism in the Spanish Civil War, which though not named serves as the backdrop for Greene's novel.

Sciencfikcio en Esperanto (14): Jacques-Louis Mahé

Jacques-Louis Mahé (1912-1992) was a professional photographer and prominent Esperantist. See also entry, photos and reviews in Originala literaturo Esperanta (OLE). Mahé wrote much popular fiction under the pseudonym "Lorjak."

Mahé also ventured into making films in Esperanto: Antaŭen (= Forward, 1936), a propaganda film about Esperanto, and Angoroj (= Agonies, 1964), the first feature-length film entirely in Esperanto. Angoroj was a crime story, and featured prominent Esperantist Raymond Schwartz among others. Note that it antedates the now-infamous Incubus (1966). See also the article in Esperanto in Vikipedio: Angoroj.  There is also an entry on Angoroj in the Internet Movie Database. You can watch the first 7 minutes of the film (plus one minute advert), narrated by eminent Esperantist Gaston Waringhien, on YouTube. The entire film, once thought lost forever, can now be downloaded (assuming the links are up-to-date).

Esperantists interested in this subject matter can easily obtain this information now. But here is a virtually unknown piece of information, learned via English, and not yet found in Esperanto. As documented in my post Sciencfikcio en Esperanto (13): International Science Fiction (4), a story supposedly from the Netherlands but actually translated from Esperanto is included in the first of two issues of International Science Fiction (no. 1, November 1967):

I will soon make a web page out of the front cover, inside front cover, and table of contents, and later probably scan this story as well. There remains one mystery to be solved: what and where is the Esperanto original of this story?

Mi ne spektis ĉi tiun filmon, do mi ne povas taksi la koncernan recenzon, kaj kompreneble ne la filmon mem. Mi ĝenerale estas malfidema pri ĉi-specaj filmoj. Do mi scivolas, ĉu fremdulo lertas analizi ĉi tiajn aferojn. Kaj se temas pri ideologie konstruata solidareco inter blankulinoj kaj nigrulinoj, mi estas duoble suspektema. Sed mi ne kapablas juĝi sole surbaze de recenzo. Ŝajnas, dankinde, ke la recenzinto estas sufiĉe perceptema.

Sam Green: The Universal Language

Sam Green presented a rough cut of this documentary at the Zamenhof Symposium at the UN in New York on 15 December 2010, the same symposium in which I spoke on the Centennial of the Esperanto Universal Congress in Washington, DC. Since then I have blogged about the forthcoming final version.

Well, the documentary has been out for some time, and can be purchased on DVD or downloaded via the Internet. In addition, Sam has a web site devoted to the documentary, with a blog and with web posts in both English and Esperanto:

Graham Greene & Esperanto (4): Confidential Agent (film)

Segments of the film Confidential Agent (1945, 118 min.) could once be found on YouTube, and the entire film was once available via the Online Movie Database, but no more. One sequence no longer viewable on YouTube was with Peter Lorre speaking in Entrenationo.

The film cannot at this time be obtained through Netflix, but a DVD does exist; it was released earlier this year and is part of the Warner Archive Collection. Here is a DVD Savant review by Glenn Erickson, 4 May 2011. Here is one paragraph from this review:

Confidential Agent has a number of inspired touches, the most amusing being a pathetic language school where Peter Lorre works. Ian Wolfe has invented an Esperanto-like international language and is convinced that world peace can be achieved if everyone simply learns to talk in the new tongue. Lorre is hilarious, conducting absurd language lessons that will never amount to anything. The scene nails the desperation of an intelligent man working a job that belongs in Alice's Wonderland. Lorre's efforts will also be amusing to language teachers.

Here is a review of Sam Green's Utopia in Four Movements that I haven't seen before and that presents something different as well:

You don't often see Adorno's name juxtaposed to Esperanto, but the theme is failed utopian dreams and their monstrous side. It's a thoughtful review. I can't help but quip, though: there is Esperanto after Auschwitz.

Lou Harrison: Mondo da Muziko

La 26-an de februaro ĉe la Nacia Artmuzeo (National Gallery of Art) en Vaŝingtono ĉeestis David Gaines, Melisa kaj Jim Ryan, kaj Ralph Dumain por spekti la inaŭguran montron de la 90-minuta dokumenta filmo Lou Harrison: A World of Music (... Mondo da Muziko) pri eminenta usona komponisto (kaj esperantisto!) Lou Harrison. David bone konas lian muzikon; mi ne, kvankam mi aĉetis registraĵon de La Koro Sutro (kiun Harrison verkis en Esperanto) antaŭ dudek jaroj. Estis ĝojo ekkoni la genion de Harrison. Lia personeco, la rango de kapabloj, la muzika intuicio, kunlaboremo kun dancistoj, integrigo de aziaj kaj okcidentaj muzikoj, estas inspiriga, rememorigas al ni la esencon de la homa kreivo.

Estas unu neagnoskita montro de Esperanto en la filmo. La partituro (muzikfolio) de "Political Primer" (politika gvidilo) inkluzivas tekston verkitan en Esperanto kaj la angla. Tiu verko temas pri la danĝero de la atombomba epoko.

Poste, Jim demandis al la ĉeestanta filmverkistino Eva Soltes, kiu invitis demandojn, pri la rolo de Esperanto. Ŝi agnoskis, ke Esperanto estas grava faktoro, kaj fakte, ke Harrison travojaĝis Japanion pere de Esperanto. La Koro Sutro mirigis la maljunajn japanojn, ke Harrison povis tiom intuici ilian sensibilon.

Eventuale ĉi tiu filmo en fina formo aperos en DVD-formato. Fakte, la plano estas eldoni diskaron da dokumenta materialo—eble 10 DVD-ojn!
