Filozofieske, bloge, Esperante

1. Kiel oni difinas sciencfikcion?

Mi mem traktis ĉi tiun aferon en mia anglalingva podkasto Science Fiction, Utopia, and the End of Imagination (1) (ĉe 7:30-9:45 min) en mia programaro Studies in a Dying Culture [Studoj pri Mortanta Kulturo, laŭ esprimo de Christopher Caudwell].

3. Rolf Hochhuth: Humaneco (El „La klasbatalo ne finiĝis“), tradukis Dorothea kaj Hans-Georg Kaiser (cezartradukoj, 11 aprilo 2019)

Kaptis mian atenton ĉi tiu bildo de Theodor W. Adorno (v. nur maŝintradukitan eron en Vikipedio). Bedaŭrinde, Hochhuth malhoneste ligas Adorno kun Himmler, kaj tiu sencerbulo Kaiser same nek komprenas nek volas kompreni Adorno.

(V. anglalingve Rolf Hochhuth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)

John Wilkins & irony (3): Adorno postscript

In my first post on this subject, I mentioned:

"Ironic Serif: A Brief History of Typographic Snark and the Failed Crusade for an Irony Mark" by Maria Popova (Brain Pickings)

As it happens, Popova wrote another piece on punctuation concerning an author who commands a great deal of my attention:

Theodor Adorno on the Art of Punctuation by Maria Popova (Brain Pickings)

Adorno took punctuation very seriously, as evidenced by an essay I have not seen: “Punctuation Marks.”
A translation of it by Shierry Weber Nicholsen was first published in the Summer 1990 issue of the poetry journal The Antioch Review and later included in Jennifer DeVere Brody’s altogether excellent Punctuation: Art, Politics, and Play (public library), the essay explores the “definitive physiognomic status” of each punctuation mark, its uses and abuses in the hands of writers, and how punctuation helps shed light on the relationship between language and music which, as we know, worked in tandem to help humanity evolve.

Popova proceeds to detail Adorno's views. Note that Adorno vehemently objected to punctuating ironic remarks. (Note also that she links to her article on the ironic serif.)

Note that Adorno's essay is discussed in Brody’s Punctuation: Art, Politics, and Play, but it is not reprinted there. Adorno's essay was collected in book form here:

Adorno, Theodor W. “Punctuation Marks,” in Notes to Literature; Volume One, edited by Rolf Tiedemann, translated by Shierry Weber Nicholsen (New York: Columbia University Press, 1991), pp. 91-97.

Transhumanism in the 1930s: Szathmári, Bernal, Horkheimer

While reviewing and researching Sándor Szathmári's classic Voyage to Kazohinia last year, I revisited and recognized the importance of this article:

Schäfer, Wolf. "Stranded at the Crossroads of Dehumanization: John Desmond Bernal and Max Horkheimer," in On Max Horkheimer: New Perspectives, edited by Seyla Benhabib, Wolfgang Bonß, and John McCole (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1993) pp. 153-183.

Here is what I wrote on 28 December 2005 upon first reading this essay:

This is right in keeping with a major concern: i.e. the incapacity of the Frankfurt School to engage intelligently the natural sciences, an inadequacy yet to be repaired. Schafer is pointed in his diagnosis of how the split between the "two cultures" (anyone still remember C.P. Snow?) could not be more sharply manifested than in the fundamental orientation of these two individuals.

What is essential to understand here is not only an absolute antithesis between Bernal and Horkheimer II, but the fact that both were products of two cultures--science and humanistic--that did not intersect or understand one another. (170-1)

Schafer quotes Horkheimer's The Eclipse of Reason (p. 75) to point up his hopeless position:
"that the division of all human truth into science and humanities is itself a social product that was hypostatized by the organization of the universities and ultimately by some philosophical schools, particularly those of Rickert and Max Weber. The so-called practical world has no place for truth, and therefore splits it to conform it to its own image: the physical sciences are endowed with so-called objectivity, but emptied of human content; the humanities preserve the human content, but only as ideology, at the expense of truth."
Schafer's evaluation of Horkheimer's position is not kind:
"If one could regard this statement itself as true and as not being warped by ideology, then the professional fractalization of truth could be cured and made whole and healthy again by a new social product, perhaps by reorganizing the universities and our intellectual life according to the gospel of some holistic philosophical school. False objectivity and true ideology could be overcome; truths without human content could be rehumanized; and truths with untruthful human content could be corrected. But the view of Horkheimer II cannot be true since it was produced inside the humanities--those branches of learning that preserve the human content . . . as ideology." Horkheimer must situate his own thinking in this ideological context. We may as well conclude, therefore, that Horkheimer II fell victim to his own deconstruction of occidental reason--that he is part of the problem and not of the solution." [172-3]
Schafer also criticizes Bernal, but then he returns to the shortcomings of critical theory:
"But neither early, middle, nor current critical theory has paid, or is paying, enough attention to the sciences and technologies that feed into and shape the natural half of human history. The dreams, fantasies, and projects of our technoscientific culture thrive with very little or no internal technocritique that is not purely technical; our most eloquent technocritics are often crudely antitechnological; and relevant academic fields, like the professional history and sociology of science and technology, care more about their own problems and research fronts than about society at the crossroads into the future." [173]
I would have phrased this differently. The key here is the incompetence of the humanistic critics of science and technology, not their willingness to criticize.

Schafer concludes with what the universities might and could do to bridge the divide, but specialization is so firmly entrenched there are no signs of any remediation.

So in the end this essay is a cry of alarm about the "two cultures", rather than the specific shortcomings of Horkheimer's philosophical understanding of the natural sciences. But as far as he goes, I'm in near complete agreement.
Returning to this essay last year, I was not so interested in Horkheimer's shortcomings as I was in Bernal's and in a key contraposition in 20th-century intellectual history that the Horkheimer-Bernal juxtaposition exemplifies.

Though Horkheimer was on the warpath against positivism, as were his philosophical colleagues, it should be noted that the logical positivists that had recently come into prominence were on the left.  Bernal, a scientist and eventually a pioneer historiographer of science, himself became a Communist, I don't know when offhand. In question here is Bernal's 1929 work The World, the Flesh, and the Devil, in which Bernal projects the transcendence of human physical existence, presenting a transhumanist vision which can readily be classified as a precursor of Szathmári's 1964 novella Maŝinmondo (Machine World).

For an extensive overview of this theme, see: Christopher Coenen, "Utopian Aspects of the Debate on Converging Technologies"; Pre-Print: 13.11.2007.

One man's utopia is another man's dystopia. The basic themes of transhumanism, while still being debated, are old now, but there was a time when they were fresh, spanning a half-century from Wells to Orwell. Szathmári merits induction into the utopian/dystopian/transhumanist Hall of Fame as one of its central figures.

In the critical literature on Szathmári in Esperanto there are some incisive critiques of the philosophical assumptions underlying Kazohinia. While there exists in Esperanto a bit of material and references here and there to the philosophers of the Frankfurt School and related thinkers, no one has yet staged a confrontation of Critical Theory and Szathmári's work. The Frankfurt theorists drew on the irrationalist philosophical heritage but always with the goal of preserving Reason, which they saw as degraded by positivism. There are still lessons to be learned from the warring dichotomies of the past century.

The Language of Democracy: Vernacular Or Esperanto? A Comparison between the Multiculturalist and Cosmopolitan Perspectives by Daniele Archibugi

Vidu ankaŭ blogeron pri: "Unpacking a Provencal Library" de Rosemary Lloyd, kiu referencas Walter Benjamin kaj Esperanton.

Unpacking a Provencal Library

Note: The title takes off from a well-known essay by German-Jewish philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin. Following the abstract are excerpts from the full text of the article. The archive in question is now to be found at the Lilly Library, Indiana University. It would be nice to locate, if possible, Aubanel's "Venus d'Arles" in Esperanto translation.

* * *

Lloyd, Rosemary. "Unpacking a provencal library. " Nineteenth-Century French Studies. 32.3-4 (Spring-Summer 2004): 332(14).

Abstract:

The recent acquisition of the library of the Aubanel family, whose best-known member was the poet, Theodore Aubanel, allows a study of the Felibrige movement, its friends, and its critics, through an analysis of the manuscript inscriptions. Of the library's 1,300 books and ten boxes of pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, and academic bulletins, there are some six hundred inscriptions and manuscript insertions written in French, Provencal, Catalan, Italian, English, and Esperanto. Ranging form brief definitions to sonnets, from praise to provocation, they shed an unaccustomed light on the writers, presses, and preoccupations of nineteenth-century Provence. (RL)

* * *

"The Provencal library in question is that of the Aubanel family, and especially of Theodore Aubanel, whom Paul Valery once termed the only true Provencal poet, and who had been such a supportive companion of Stephane Mallarme during the grim time he spent as a teacher in the provinces, the dear friend to whom Mallarme would write sending kisses from his daughter Genevieve, then a toddler, to Aubanel's infant son Jean-de-la-Croix. (2) Aubanel was a member of the Felibrige, (3) the band of Provencal writers who in the second half of the nineteenth century, at a time when Paris was rapidly extending its linguistic and cultural hegemony, were struggling to preserve at least some aspects of their culture, in a bid whose most concrete trace can be round in the Museon Arletan in Arles, to which Frederic Mistral devoted the money he earned from his Nobel Prize. (4) But the members of the Felibrige were also attempting not just to preserve the Provencal language, but also to transform into a written language what until then had been largely a spoken language (at least since the middle ages). In 1855 they founded an almanac, L'Armana prouvencau, which is still published today and which reflects this intellectual, artistic, and political conviction of the importance of those non-French languages and cultures practiced within the hexagon."

* * *

"Approximately six hundred of the books and pamphlets, moreover, include manuscript additions, either in the form of inscriptions written directly on the volume, or in that of inserted letters or poems. (7) There are also, lamentably, several traces of authors or presses who simply resorted to a stamp--Hommage de l'auteur--truly the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction. These envois and dedications suggest something of the writer's aspirations for his work (rarely, in this particularly masculine culture, her work--Marie Jenna and Adele Souchier are among the few exceptions). (8) Insofar as they indicate the level of attachment to the movement and its purposes, the inscriptions furnish a sense of an effervescent if somewhat heterogeneous fellowship, with links to many other groups who were trying to give prominence to what we now term less-studied languages, languages like Catalan and Welsh, Esperanto and Gaelic. The network of relationships such dedications sketch allows us, not just, as Robert Darnton has argued, to "inspect the furnishings" of a library-owner's mind (134), but more importantly to see the Felibrige movement, and indeed the clusters of such movements, from a perspective quite different from that provided by more conventional historical approaches."

* * *

"Written in French and Provencal, Catalan, Italian, English, and Esperanto, these manuscript insertions run the gamut of the genre of the inscription"

* * *

"And although there are no books inscribed by Mistral, there is a card from him, in his beautiful handwriting, and his 1909 Mirejo has an insert, a translation of Aubanel's "Venus d'Arles" into Esperanto. (27) Aubanel's poem, which is part of his collection Li Fiho d'Avignoun (The Girls of Avignon), is there in his handwriting with his translation into French."

Kulturindustrio detruas

http://eo.mondediplo.com/article918.html

Cinika Racio Difinita
tradukita el angla traduko: What Is Cynical Reason? Peter Sloterdijk Explains.
