Sam Green: The Universal Language

Sam Green presented a rough cut of this documentary at the Zamenhof Symposium at the UN in New York on 15 December 2010, the same symposium in which I spoke on the Centennial of the Esperanto Universal Congress in Washington, DC. Since then I have blogged about the forthcoming final version.

Well, the documentary has been out for some time, and can be purchased on DVD or downloaded via the Internet. In addition, Sam has a web site devoted to the documentary, with a blog and with web posts in both English and Esperanto:

I have blogged before about Lou Harrison, in English and Esperanto. I myself first encountered Eva Soltes at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, at the presentation of a documentary film about Harrison. This was the first event in a symposium about Harrison. I reported on this event (and subsequently the others) in Esperanto:

Interpreting Lou Harrison

I found an interesting treatise on Lou Harrison, with several references to Esperanto:

There are extensive discussions of Harrison's Music Primer and Pacifika Rondo, mentions of La Koro Sutro and Esperanto translations of Harrison's poems, with citations of Harrison's fulsome praise for Esperanto. Issues surrounding "the meeting of East and West" are also analyzed. Note also the extensive bibliography. Here are a few items of interest:

This beautifully designed and illustrated poetry collection retailed for $20. I found it in an unclassified bargain bin in Strand Books in New York City for $1. From the back matter: here's some background on the book:

The text of this book is set in Pluma Book. "Pluma" is Esperanto for "of the pen," and the alphabet possesses a complete set of Esperanto characters. The title page and cover are set in Pluma Book and Uncial Commoncase. Both fonts are used for the first time in this book. They are based on drawings by Lou Harrison, and were rendered for the Computer by Carter Scholz.

Lou Harrison & la gamelono

Sabaton vespere, la 4an de marto 2011, en Vaŝingtono okazis la dua evento en soleno de komponisto kaj Esperantisto Lou Harrison. Ĉeestis kelkaj lokaj esperantistoj (plus kunulinoj), kaj tie ni renkontis ankaŭ iaman esperantistinon el Minsk.

Ni esperis aŭskulti gamelonan koncerton, sed okazis serio de prelegantoj kun filmetoj, bildoj, montrado de instrumentoj. . . kun frandaĵoj por ni gastoj.

La ambasadejo de Indonezio estas grandioza, belega konstruaĵo kiun originale posedis iu riĉulo. Oni ne anticipis ke venus 300 gastoj. Estis multaj ĉeestantoj kiuj plenigis du ĉambrojn, pluraj starantaj. La unua preleginto parolis klare, sed estis malfacile kompreni la ceterajn se oni sidis en la dua ĉambrego.

La unua preleginto estis la plej interesa. Li parolis pri Harrison mem. Post iom da ‘politike korekteca’ cerbumado pri ‘kultura alproprigo’, li priskribis iom da historio de engaĝo pri gamelona muziko fare de okcidentaj komponistoj. Mi antaŭe havis nenian ideon ke Debussy estis admiranto de ĉi tiu muziko. Ankaŭ usona komponisto Henry Cowell, kiu edukis Harrison, estis tia. (Mi ne estas fakulo pri la tradicio de usona eksperimenta muziko, sed ĝi estas tre interesa, aparte ĉar ĝi ne sklavis al eŭropaj modeloj.) Kaj ni povas denove fieri pri nia lingvo.

Lou Harrison: Mondo da Muziko

La 26-an de februaro ĉe la Nacia Artmuzeo (National Gallery of Art) en Vaŝingtono ĉeestis David Gaines, Melisa kaj Jim Ryan, kaj Ralph Dumain por spekti la inaŭguran montron de la 90-minuta dokumenta filmo Lou Harrison: A World of Music (... Mondo da Muziko) pri eminenta usona komponisto (kaj esperantisto!) Lou Harrison. David bone konas lian muzikon; mi ne, kvankam mi aĉetis registraĵon de La Koro Sutro (kiun Harrison verkis en Esperanto) antaŭ dudek jaroj. Estis ĝojo ekkoni la genion de Harrison. Lia personeco, la rango de kapabloj, la muzika intuicio, kunlaboremo kun dancistoj, integrigo de aziaj kaj okcidentaj muzikoj, estas inspiriga, rememorigas al ni la esencon de la homa kreivo.

Estas unu neagnoskita montro de Esperanto en la filmo. La partituro (muzikfolio) de "Political Primer" (politika gvidilo) inkluzivas tekston verkitan en Esperanto kaj la angla. Tiu verko temas pri la danĝero de la atombomba epoko.

Poste, Jim demandis al la ĉeestanta filmverkistino Eva Soltes, kiu invitis demandojn, pri la rolo de Esperanto. Ŝi agnoskis, ke Esperanto estas grava faktoro, kaj fakte, ke Harrison travojaĝis Japanion pere de Esperanto. La Koro Sutro mirigis la maljunajn japanojn, ke Harrison povis tiom intuici ilian sensibilon.

Eventuale ĉi tiu filmo en fina formo aperos en DVD-formato. Fakte, la plano estas eldoni diskaron da dokumenta materialo—eble 10 DVD-ojn!

Lou Harrison (1917-2003), composer & Esperantist

I'm guessing it was in the late 1980s when I purchased Lou Harrison's recording of his composition "La Koro Sutro", which in Esperanto means "The Heart Sutra".

Some years later, while spending hours rifling through the unsorted dollar bins at Strand Books in New York, if not the main book store at Broadway and 12th then the newer store at Fulton Street, I chanced across this find:

Joys and Perplexities: Selected Poems of Lou Harrison

All I remember about the book is that Harrison designed his own font. Until I unearth my copy from wherever it's buried, I won't be able to refresh my memory whether any of the poems were written in Esperanto. Until then, I'll just put this down as one of those treasures one finds in book hunts in the cheapie bins where no one cares.
