Macedonio: Selected Writings in Translation

Jen citaĵo el la Enkonduko:

The poetry of Macedonio Fernández is doubly strange: strange for the unaccustomed conceptions of birth and death, life and love on which it rests, strange for the metalanguage created for their expression. Juan Ramón Jiménez described the poetic language of Macedonio as “a personal Esperanto, the language of nowhere . . . the tongue of Dante, Blake, Hölderlin.”

Mi aparte rimarkas William Blake, Jorge Luis Borges, Giordano Bruno, Charlie Chaplin, M. C. Escher, René Magritte, Rainer Maria Rilke, Jonathan Swift.

Lin inspiris la hungara tradicio, aparte Madách kaj Karinthy (kiuj interesas min), ankaŭ artistoj kiuj ege min interesas--Blake, Escher, Magritte.

Ju pli mi esploras, des pli mi konvinkiĝas, ke la ŝlosila verkisto, kiun mi devas studi, estas Karinthy.

Chloe Yelena Miller, William Blake, Esperanto: time & language

I stumbled across this interesting blog post:

Chloe Yelena Miller and the Past, Present, and Future

The subject is the manipulation of verb tenses and thus time in poems. Two examples are given and analyzed. The first is William Blake's poem "The Tyger." The second is a poem by contemporary poet Chloe Yelena Miller, from her chapbook Unrest. (The poem is also reproduced by the blogger The Dressing at 2013 DC Shorts: Women Working without Words, but now back to the first blog post mentioned.)

Here is Miller's poem, followed by Kenneth Ronkowitz's commentary.

    No Infinitive

We met in Esperanto, declared:                   Mi amas vin.

Which means (in case I forget):                    I love you.

We swam in the Sardinian sea, the water as blank
as your conjugations. I wear one piece of my two piece:
topless.

I will, first person future,
label these photos in our language
without a national body. The word
for our actions is not a noun.

Gender neutral, were we
heterosexual? The flexible
syntax translucent, nudity's definition.

I could pronounce (phonetics):                     You.

There were rules: The accent
is always on the next to last syllable.

It was carnival, a meatless (almost meaty) masked
party. Lent followed, we gave up
each other (reflexively).

The commentary:
I like it right off that they met in Esperanto. Not a place, but a language, and a word that translates as "one who hopes." We could follow the thread of Esperanto's three tenses and three moods. Maybe your poem can work with the poetic and non-English jussive mood that is used for wishes and commands.

And her poem ends "reflexively" - a form that cause problems for English speakers learning a new language since this feature is practically absent in English. The literal reflexive means the agent is simultaneously the patient. That's grammar class talk meaning we do it to ourselves. How poetic is the reflexive: to enjoy oneself, hurt oneself, kill oneself, convince, deny or to encourage oneself.

William Auld: Pri lingvo kaj aliaj artoj (5): tradukado

William Auld, Pri lingvo kaj aliaj artoj. Antverpeno; La Laguna: TK / Stafeto, 1978. 213 p.

Do eĉ fakuloj neglektas ekz. hungaran literaturon.

Mi dubas ĉi tiun absolutan aserton, sed Auld argumentas sian pozicion.

Specimeno A: L'abatros de Charles Baudelaire, kun tradukoj en Esperanto (de Kalocsay) kaj la angla;

Specimeno B: La tigro de William BLAKE, elangligis William AULD kun anglalingva originalo kaj franca traduko de Félix ROSE (kun komentaro pri la tradukoj);

Specimeno C: Anĉaro de Aleksandr PUŜKIN, elrusigis KALOCSAY Kálmán, enangligis Walter MORISON.

Blake couplet in Esperanto / Versoj de William Blake & Bob Dylan

I haven't had much time for Esperanto lately, but the notion of translating this couplet popped into my head:

How do you know but ev'ry Bird that cuts the airy way,
Is an immense world of delight, clos'd by your senses five?
-- William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Plate 7
My Esperanto translation:
Kiu scius, se ĉiu bird’ tranĉante ĉielvojon
ĝuas ene vastan mondon kiun via sensokvino kaŝas?
I did it!

In 1987, I used the coinage "ĉielvojo" to translate (on this blog) the ending of a Bob Dylan song:
Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me
“How good, how good does it feel to be free?”
And I answer them most mysteriously
“Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?”

-- Bob Dylan, "Ballad in Plain D"
Me:
Amikoj ripetas en la karcer':
"Kiel bone, kiel bone ja sentus' liber'."
Sed mi respondas kun multa mister':
"Ĉu birdojn ne ĉenas ĉielvojo?"

Clarence Bicknell (1842-1918)

Clarence Bicknell (1842-1918) estis eminenta angla esperantisto, kiu ankaŭ verkis originale kaj traduke.

Kiel vi vidos, mia elserĉo de ĉi-lasta havas interesan historion: mi unue eltrovis ĝin en bibliografio pri Blake, kaj la fonto ne estis esperantista sed obskura japanlingva revuo pri Blake kaj Whitman.

Here two usually distinct lines of humanistic inquiry intersect: Blake studies and the history of linguistics and the scientific revolution. Conceptions of language and signification, evolving with the rationalism and empiricism of early modern philosophy and science, are challenged by Blake’s radically different world view.

Of particular interest here is Chapter 2, in which Blake’s view of language is contrasted with the philosophical languages of the 17th and 18th centuries—Wilkins, Dalgarno, etc.—a comparison one does not often see. See also pp. 133-135 for more on John Wilkins.

Presumably here one can learn more about the historically evolving dialectic between scientism and romanticism in the modern world.

Steffan, T. G. (Truman Guy), komp. Lord Byron’s Cain: Twelve Essays and a Text with Variants and Annotations. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1968. xvii, 509 p.

Esperanto: the one who hopes (documentary video)

I don't know how I could have forgotten to report on this before. A year ago I participated in a documentary on Esperanto done as a high school project. The student sent me a copy of her finished documentary, and eventually put it up on YouTube. Here is Israt Pasha's 32-minute documentary on Esperanto, "Esperanto: One Who Hopes", "starring" Anders Paulli Bertelsen, Neil Blonstein, Ralph Dumain, Ferdinand Cesarano, Renata Ventura.

I was a panelist at a symposium on L.L. Zamenhof at the UN on December 15, 2010, the lion's share of reportage of which was devoted to George Soros' surprise appearance. (You will see me and other participants in videos and photos.) Israt approached me afterward and asked me to participate in her documentary. I made a video of my responses to her queries some months later, when I was still recovering from a month-long illness.

In this documentary there are graphics, fragments of other videos, photos, voiceovers, and interspersed fragments of the various video interviews, and in some cases, voiceovers from those interviews. There are explanations of the language, personal experiences with it, various uses of the language (e.g. the news magazine Monato), the question of opposition to Esperanto, and various opinions on the role of Esperanto in the world, now and in the future. There is some "finvenkismo" (doctrine of the "final victory" of Esperanto as an international auxiliary language) in it, along with my refutation of same. The question of preservation of natural languages is addressed, with my dissenting opinion on the matter. My positive comments on the language and movement also appear at the beginning and end.

My translation of William Blake's "I feared the fury of the wind" is used as a voiceover at the end, coupled with a series of Esperanto & Zamenhof-related photos: I find this disconcerting because the harsh social criticism of Blake's poem has nothing to do with the Esperanto movement and does not match the manifestly positive images of Esperantists and Zamenhof.

There are other aspects of the documentary I find disjointed, partly because of the way fragments of the interviewees' videos are spliced together and the various themes of the documentary are developed. Anything else I would criticize would be the opinions of some of the Esperantists. Personal experiences and facts are inherently more convincing than half-baked propaganda (if not in the world at large, certainly in the case of Esperanto). Nitpicking aside, this high school student did an impressive job, with decent production values, and I applaud her effort.

William Auld revizitata (4)

La temo ĉi-foje . . .

"Gvidilo tra la Angla Poezio" de William Auld

Ĉi tiu poemo konsistas el disaj humuraj versaj komentetoj pri diversaj anglaj poetoj — Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, Johnson, Gray, Blake, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Hood — & Edgar Allen Poe.

Kompreneble ĉi tiu ne estas eĉ neformala gvidilo. Plej interesas min la anglaj romantikuloj (tiel nomitaj).

Esperanto USA 2010 Congress (4): “Esperanto, Washington, & the World in 1910”

Ralph Dumain: “Esperanto, Washington, and the World in 1910” /
“Esperanto, Vaŝingtono, kaj la Mondo en 1910”

58th National Congress of Esperanto USA (Bethesda, MD, May 28-31, 2010) /
58-a Landa Kongreso de Esperanto USA

On May 30 I delivered my talk on this topic in Esperanto, with the assistance of Verlette Simon, who coordinated my accompanying “slide show.” This talk is part of a larger research effort to analyze the American Esperanto movement of a century ago with a view to the broader social forces that converged on Washington in 1910, as my way of commemorating this centennial and the Zamenhof sesquicentennial. (1)

I briefly enumerated a number of relevant perspectives: diplomacy, science and technology, commerce, labor, women’s rights, religion and freethought, Latin America, European and American Jews and Zamenhof’s own Eastern European Jewish perspective, and the general ethos of optimistic prospects on the threshold of the 20th century which began with epochal scientific and technological breakthroughs. My talk took off from a contrast between Zamenhof’s famous “Land of Liberty” speech and the reality of Jim Crow Washington, and culminated in the hitherto unexplored African-American perspective.

Most noteworthy is the contrast between our national congress of 2010—which could have gone unnoticed by the wider world were it not for the luck of being briefly spotlighted by National Public Radio (2)—and the 1910 International Congress, which was the subject of daily headline news in four Washington newspapers, as well as reportage by newspapers around the nation. My “slide show” was comprised largely of clippings from the Washington Herald and Washington Times, which reveal the range of activities of the Congress, including the performance of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in Esperanto and the use of Esperanto in a major league baseball game, as well as the serious attention given to Esperanto by diplomats, heads of state, government representatives, and a major American labor leader.

Then I sprang the aspect of my project of greatest personal interest: my attempt to document the reportage of Esperanto and international languages in the black press and my quest for the unknown history of black participation in the Esperanto movement. My most significant find here was William Pickens, who surfaced as an advocate of Esperanto in 1906 and who later became an eminent professor and college administrator and leader in the civil rights movement of the time. There’s a further linkage to the contemporary poet Elizabeth Alexander, who writes of Pickens in a poem as the “first Afro-American Esperantist” and who delivered on the steps of the Capitol the commemorative poem she wrote for the inauguration of President Obama! Who could have foreseen such an event in 1910?

I followed up this presentation with an hour-long radio program in Buffalo, NY, on June 7, in which I summarized this talk, added remarks on likely reasons for Zamenhof’s perspective on the United States, and recited my three Esperanto translations of poems by William Blake which I had recited in the “Poezia Rondo” which also transpired at the Esperanto Congress.

tradukis Ralph Dumain

Bonulojn logas homperceptoj;
Ili per si mem ne pensas;
Ĝis Spert’ instruos kapti, kaĝe
Elfojn kaj feinojn, saĝe.

Sekvas grunt’ de la fripon’
Kaj hipokrita hurlo;
El amikoj malkaŝiĝas la intrigo,
Kaj distingiĝas aglo de la strigo.

The Good are attracted by Mens perceptions
And Think not for themselves
Till Experience teaches them to catch
And to cage the Fairies & Elves

And then the Knave begins to snarl
And the Hypocrite to howl
And all his good Friends shew their private ends
And the Eagle is known from the Owl

William Blake 250-jara: eseo eldonita

Tigro, tigr', ho brula hel'
En l'arbaroj de l'obskuro,
Kiaj fataj man', okulo
Faris vin terura bel'?
