Leder heard the old man out with uncharacteristic patience, then casually inquired whether he had ever heard of Popper-Lynkeus’ inventions in the field of aeronautics. With a smile Havkin answered that not only was he familiar with the biography of that unhappy and disappointment-fraught Jewish-Viennese genius, he was also well versed in his social and economic views. Indeed, there had been a time when The Necessity for General Nutrition had never left his side.

“Don’t you think it should be translated into Esperanto?” queried Leder, who had never dreamed of such luck.

“It’s a book of the highest importance,” Havkin agreed, “a must for any Esperanto library.” Unfortunately, however, the Esperantists had been unable to find the right man for the job.

“Ecce homo!” Leder cried, pointing to himself with childish glee. Waving the green primer, he declared that he was now engaged in studying Esperanto from morning till night and was sure that he could finish a sample chapter from Popper-Lynkeus’ great work in several weeks’ time.

Havkin threw his arms around his guest in a comradely embrace. Did Leder’s decision, he wondered, have anything to do with his own appearance at Greenberg’s bookbindery earlier that week?

Afterward, while we sat on the concrete patio in front of Havkin’s house looking at the mountain ridges falling away in waves to the coastal plain and cracking almonds from the old man’s trees, Leder explained his proposal for a united front of Esperantists, vegetarians, and Lynkeans. The forces of good, he declared, should band together in the struggle for their goals, which were complementary rather than opposed.

“In the Lynkean state,” Leder announced, Esperanto will be the official language of the government, as well as of all schools and universities. The eating of meat and fish will be illegal. All slaughterhouses and butcher shops will be expropriated for the public good, and the slaughterers, butchers, and fishermen will be sent to special schools to be re-educated. Eggs and milk products will be sold only by special permit and will have to be eaten in private.”

The old man listened intently, making a sour face when Leder enthusiastically proclaimed that the portraits of Josef Popper-Lynkeus and Esperanto’s inventor Dr. Ludwig Zamenhoff, the two official state philosophers, would be hung in all public places.

“That reminds me too much of the pictures of Marx and Engels in the streets of Moscow,” Havkin said. In any case, he remarked, he was too old by now for such things. Leder, he added after a moment’s thought, could do worse than listen to someone like himself who had seen so many lofty ideals besmirched through their contact with politics. “Don't forget the story of Icarus, my young man. If they come too close to the glowing sun of political passion, both Lynkeanism and Esperantism will smash themselves to bits on the hard ground of reality.”

“Politics have nothing to do with it,” objected Leder, trying to point out Havkin’s error. But our elderly host only replied that he did not wish to spoil his Sabbath rest by losing his temper unnecessarily. If we were not in any hurry, he went on, he would be happy to welcome us inside his house and show us the one pastime of his otherwise Spartan existence.

The meeting with Havkin marked a turning point in theannals of the Lynkean movement.

When we left the vegetarian discussion club, Lederwas back in fighting spirits. Though our movement, he confessed, had fallen on hardtimes, indeed had sunk into lethargy, we were about to make a fresh start.

“Esperantoopens undreamed-of horizons for us," he nearly shouted, affirming that we must translate into it at once TheNecessity for General Nutrition.

“We'll break through the narrow barriers of nationalboundaries,” he went on, “and comb the civilized world for those chosen few whowould rather make do with a kerosene burner and an ice chest than have theluxury of a gas stove and a frigidaire.”

As usual, he became engrossed at once in the finepoints of his plan; the first thing in the morning, he announced, he was goingto Ludwig Maier’s bookstore to buy some Esperanto texts. Within a few weeks hewould be ready to begin translating Popper-Lynkeus’ great work into theinternational language of the future.

That Saturday afternoon we set out on foot for Havkin’sfarm in Giv’at Sha’ul.

Leder lost no time on the way and occupied himselfwith memorizing Esperanto sentences from a primer on whose cover was a white,six-sided star of David with a green, five-sided star inside it.

“Mi lernas Esperanton, vi lernas Esperanton, lilernas Esperanton,” he recited as we left the city behind. “Esperanto,Esperanto, Esperanto,” echoed the hills rising above us. On theterrace of the mental hospital overlooking the road in which he was soon to belocked up himself, the inmates ceased their antics for a moment, grasped thebars like monkeys, and stared at the odd pedestrian shouting meaninglessphrases at the brutal sun while a hypnotized child strode beside him.

Havkin was sitting in the shade of a grape vine onhis front porch, his face in an open book. So absorbed was he in his readingthat he failed to notice the two strangers disturbing the Sabbath peace of thesleepy dirt path leading up to his house. Leder scrutinized the jacket of thebook, his lips slowly spelling out its title. Our vegetarian acquaintance, hewhispered to me, was presently in the bedroom of an incurably ill Ivan Ilyitch,helping the dying man’s faithful servant to prop up his swollen feet againstthe pain.

“Bonan Sabaton!” called Leder, leaning againstthe fence. “But it still isn’t your death, sinjoro Havkin,"he added, quoting Tolstoy’s unforgettable line.

“What, what?” cried out Havkin, the bookslipping front his shaking hands, amazed to find the printed words take flightfrom the page and double back to him from the street.

Over his shoulder I spied a short, elderly man making his way almost noiselessly through the empty lot between Greenberg’s yard and Jaffa Road. The closer he came, the clearer grew the features of his ascetic, white-goateed face with its deep-socketed, visionary eyes.

"Saluton, sinjoro Greenberg!" he greeted the bookbinder when he reached the front gate.

Greenberg spun around and quickly returned the greeting. "Saluton, sinjoro Havkin, kiel vi fartas?"

He fondly laid a mud-caked hand on his visitor’s shoulder and informed me that it was our pleasure today to play host to a great pioneer of Jewish vegetarianism, the distinguished Mr. Havkin, who for years had been putting utopian theory into practice on the farm he had built with his own two hands in the hills outside Jerusalem.

"Kiu estas, tiu bela knabo?" Mr. Havkin asked, pinching my check.

“I don't know Spanish,” I replied.

“It’s not Spanish, it’s Esperanto,” said the old man, asking whether I had learned in school about Dr. Ludwig Zamenhoff and the international tongue he had invented. After inquiring again of Greenberg, this time in Hebrew, who the handsome young boy was, he assured me that it would be well worth my while to acquire a language that was certain to be the world’s most widely spoken before long. And it would be best for me to do so immediately, while I was still young and quick to absorb.

For once the club discussion, which, needless to say, concerned Esperanto, was conducted in an atmosphere of calm.

Greenberg ceded his place at the head of the table to Mr. Havkin, in, while he himself sat on Havkin’s right, ready to do the old man’s bidding. Lev-Tamim, unnaturally preoccupied, whittled flowers on his walking stick, while Leder busily jotted down notes.

Havkin began by remarking that, since the day of its groundbreaking, the unfinished Tower of Babel had loomed at humanity’s back and cast its menacing shadow. “Once and for all,” he said, “we must overcome this ancient catastrophe by taking the line of ‘One humanity, one language’—not in order to rebel against the gods, but on the contrary, to fructify the earth.”

In great detail the venerable old man listed the advantages of the language of the future. Though it was easy to learn, its writing being phonetic and its grammar so simple that it could be mastered in a matter of hours, it was rich enough to express all human thoughts, and, last but not least, it was the only neutral tongue in the world, whose rival power blocs were engaged in a cold war that might flare up at any moment.

Havkin ended his address by quoting forty members of the French Academy, who concluded in a report published as far back as 1924 that Esperanto was a model of logical clarity. Once the vegetarian movement adopted it as its official language, he hoped, the day would be near when the rest of the human race would follow in its footsteps.

Leibniz, race, nation . . . & universal language!

I am amazed when two entirely separate interests unexpectedly intersect. In this case, I had just acquired a book on the issue of racism in early modern philosophy. (I am footnoted in the essay on Spinoza.) I turned to this essay on Leibniz:

Fenves, Peter. “Imagining an Inundation of Australians; or, Leibniz on the Principles of Grace and Race,” in Race and Racism in Modern Philosophy, edited by Andrew Valls (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2005), pp. 73-89.

The editor Andrew Valls summarizes Fenves' argument on p. 10. To add to it: Leibniz is mistakenly identified as a pioneer in the advocacy of 'race' as a concept, where in actuality he never endorsed François Bernier's work. The closest he came to advocacy of noxious distinctions was in his youthful proposal to unite the powers of Europe in a campaign of conquest of the 'semi-beasts' of the non-Christian world and even to indoctrinate them as servile conscripts in this campaign. Liebniz's views of language are relevant here, and may be damning in a way that we would not otherwise realize. The concept of race, though, is not at issue. Leibniz's mature philosophy makes the concept of race practically unworkable, as, according to the monadology the classification of individuals and their conceptual subsumption into larger groups becomes metaphysically problematic. Furthermore, he revises his notions of non-Christian non-Europeans, taking the example of 'Australians', and argues that as rational beings they could be converted to Christianity.

This is certainly interesting, and as far as the military campaign is concerned, even more damning than what most people know about Leibniz's proposal for the invasion of Egypt as a deflection from the prospect of war in Europe. But the unexpected twist here is that there is a connection to Leibniz's interest in a universal language (and his advocacy of national languages and national particularity, e.g. with respect to German) and even to the taxonomy of the most successful inventor of an a priori artificial language, John Wilkins!

Mi jam blogis pri La Harlema Renesanco pritraktita en Literatura Mondo en 1934, kaj pri Izrael Lejzerowicz, kiu, cetere, publikigis plurajn artikolojn en Literatura Mondo sub la pseŭdonimo Georgo Verda.

Lejzerowicz estas bone konata kiel aŭtoro de la satiro El la "Verda Biblio". Li ankaŭ distingiĝis per traduko de La Sorĉistino el Kastilio de Sholem Asch. Kiel Georgo Verda Lejzerowicz esprimis multe da amareco pri la stato de la homa socio kaj pri la Esperanto-movado. Mi jam raportis pri lia eseo "Zamenhof eraris." Mi ĵus enretigis alian rimarkindan eseon:

“Nigraĵoj,” en Literatura Mondo, aprilo 1933 (#4), p. 55.

Ĉi tie mi lernas unuafoje pri la joruba esperantisto Kola Ajayi. Jean Forge rekrutis S-ron Ajayi kaj verkis pri li en "Nia Nigra Filo," nuntempe kritikata kiel rasisma. Nu, Verda/Lejzerowicz mokas la tutan prezenton de Ajayi inter la blankulaj esperantistoj. La blankulo rajtas ĝui la afrikanon kiel ekzotikan primitivulon senpolitikigitan, tiel restante "senkulpe blanka." Verda / Lejzerowicz skeptikas ankaŭ, pripensante la sintenon de usonanoj pri negroj, pri la bonvenigemo de usonaj esperantistoj. Li prezentas la demandon, ĉu la diablo estas nigra, aŭ blanka? Ludante kun la kolorsimbolismo, li montras diversekzemple la "nigron" de la diabla blanka mondregno.

Ĉu Lejzerowicz iomete anticipis propran eventualan sorton en blankula civilizo? En 1942 li mortis en nazia ekstermejo Treblinka.

Mi bezonas eltrovi, kiu estas "L."

Rimarku, ke "Observo" estas la ĝenerala rubriko por recenzoj.

Miareteje troveblas mia transskribo kun notoj kaj retligo al la koncerna numero, plus aliaj rilataj retligoj.

Jen mia dua enretigo, kun notoj, de recenzo el 1934:

Mi solenas per daŭrigo de miaj laboroj en la arkivo de Literatura Mondo, ekz.:

La aŭtoro (pseŭdonimo?) komencas per la konstato ke "la paciga rolo de Esperanto estas nura iluzio." Sekvas amaraj asertoj pri la esperantistoj mem. Li dankemas, ke Esperanto ankoraŭ ne venkis, ĉar se jes, "la homaro estus delonge pereinta en reciproka buĉado." Mi ridegas kaj paradokse ĝojas legante ĉi tion. (Ĉu ne oni diris la saman en La Petveturista Gvidlibro pri la Galaksio?)

Nu, la aŭtoro devis ankaŭ alfronti la minacon de faŝismo, kiu jam jukis subigi la mondon, kaj li trovis, evidente, tiu sama etoso penetranta la Esperanto-movadon. La aŭtoro lamentas mankon de internigo de la interna ideo, kaj speciale kulpigas la "neŭtralan" movadon pro manko de unuigaj ideoj. Li konkludas:

"Ĉu ne estus plej logike kaj praktike, se la esperantistoj dividu sin en kelkajn frakciojn, konforme al siaj apartaj mondrigardoj?"

Almenaŭ en tiuj specifaj sferoj Esperanto povus trovi siajn verajn samideanojn kaj efektivigi interkomunikadon, interpaciĝon, kaj unuiĝon. Anstataŭ konstante interbatalanta, interfrapanta "granda rondo familia" , stariĝus pli fratecaj, pacemaj rondetoj.

Mia unua "enkonduko" al li okazis pli frue, antaŭ preskaŭ 40 jaroj, kiam mi konis nek Nogueira nek Lukács nek Hegel. Amiko mia abonis la revuon Nordan Prismon, kiun mi prunteprenis. Do kiam mi legis n-ron 1an de jaro 1972, mi legis la eseon "Arta Partikulareco kaj Esperanto," en kiu Nogueira skizas la literaturteorion de Georg (György) Lukács, pioniro de "okcidenta marksismo," ankaŭ kiun mi ne konis. Kurioze, ke malgraŭ forgeso de ĉio alia en tiu numero, fakte en tiu baldaŭ ĉesonta revuo, mi memoris (se nebule) post jardekoj ĉi tiun eseon. Supozeble mi iomete memoris la pritrakton de la vivpovo de diversaj ĝenroj en Esperanta beletro.

Nogueira resumas komparon inter la trajtoj de scienco kaj de arto, kaj la rilatoj inter universaleco, singulareco, kaj partikulareco. Mi ne certas pri la plej taŭgaj tradukoj de la terminoj. Eble oni povus ankaŭ uzi la vortojn "ĝeneraleco" kaj "individu(ec)o".

Partikulareco estus sintezo inter la polusoj de universaleco kaj singulareco. Diversaj ĝenroj pli emas situi diversloke inter la du polusoj. La dramo pli proksimas ol la eposo al universaleco. La romano situas pli proksime ol la liriko al singulareco. Nu, sekcio II de la eseo plu klarigas.

Parto III temas pri la demando de partikulareco en Esperanta literaturo, plej tikle pri la kapablo de Esperanto redoni la konkretaĵojn, la specifaĵojn de socikulturaj situacioj. Esperanton alfrontas du supozoj: (1) Esperanto nur povas esprimi konumajn, universalajn homajn trajtojn kaj ne kulturajn apartaĵojn; (2) Esperanto apartenas al nenies ĉiutaga socia vivo, do mankas lokaj ĵargonoj, sukaj specifaj esprimoj, ktp. Nogueira respondas: (1) ĉiu grava literaturaĵo travivas preter sia tempo kaj loko; (2) Naciaj literaturaĵoj universaliĝas per tradukado kaj ĉiaokaze riskiĝas perdoj de realismaj konkretaj lingvaj esprimoj, referencoj, kaj aludoj. Esperanta literaturo ĉiam troviĝas en tradukeca reĝimo: "universaleco nenie povas harmoniiĝi kun realisma reprezentado de de lingva nivelo."

La fokuso de sekcio IV estas la evoluo de Esperanta literaturo. La juna Esperanta literaturo forte emis al universaleco. Poezio pli rapide evoluis ol prozo, subjektiva ol objektiva liriko, noveloj ol romanoj. Oni trovas malpartikularecan tendencon ankaŭ interne de la ĝenroj, subjektivajn personajn spertojn kaj eskapismon. Nogueira taksas pintajn atingojn La Infana Raso de William Auld kaj rakonto "La Tripieda Teruro" de Reto Rossetti (en la novelaro El la Maniko). (Jen kurioza elekto ĉi-lasta: oni ne inkluzivas ĉi tiun novelon el la novelaro en antologioj, kaj ne ĉiuj recenzintoj ŝategis ĉi tiujn novelojn de Rossetti; Sten Johansson severe kritikis la tuton kaj mikse taksis la koncernan novelon: Ne atuto.) En fikcia kampo singulareco gravas; Esperanta fikcio ankoraŭ ne sukcesis laŭ dimensio de partikulareco.

Nu, ĉi tiu eseo estis verkita antaŭ proksimume tri jardekoj. Eĉ se oni tute konsentus kun la tiama Nogueira, oni devus ĝisdatigi la takson laŭ la gamo de pli aktuala Esperanta beletro. Aldone, oni devus ekzameni la gamon de traduka beletro en Esperanto por konstati kiom sukcesis tradukado de kulturaj specifaĵoj, konsidere ke en Esperanto mankas sociaj kaj regionaj dialektoj, pluraj paroltavoloj krom distingoj inter formalaj kaj neformalaj esprimoj, decaj kaj maldecaj esprimoj. Pri la originala literaturo, oni konsideru progreson laŭ kaj enhavo kaj formo, kiuj implicas distingendajn problemojn.

Aliaj plendoj troveblas, ekz. samtempa, pri originala poezio: The Secret Malady of Esperanto Poetry [La sekreta malsano de Esperanta poezio] (1973) de Julius Balbin. Nogueira mem ne kontentis pri la reganta konservativa postularo de poezia formo. Li mem faris eksperimenton je avangarda poezio, en poemaro Vivo kaj Vorto, kie li pli sukcese propagandas siajn principojn ol poezie sukcesas, kaj ne sekvis postaj provoj. (Karl Schulze (1974) taŭge taksas lian malsukceson.) Lukács mem malaprobis modernisman/avangardan beletron: jen alia rakonto. Mi ne estas ĝisdata rilate al Esperanta kaj beletro kaj literaturkritiko. Supozeble oni povus testi la teoriajn perspektivojn de Lukács kaj aliaj en konekso kun taksado de Esperanta beletro.

Clelia Conterno GUGLIELMINETTI raportas en sia recenzo en La Nica Literatura Revuo, ke ŝi trovis ĉi tiun detektivromanon senvalora ĝis alveno ĉe ĉi tiu poemo, kaj poste la romano ravis ŝin.

Teodor Julin favore recenzis kaj resumis la romanon en Norda Prismo.

Aktuala verkisto Sten Johansson en recenzo Minora sed mirinda ne nur alte taksas la verkon sed pledas por restarigo de Szilágyi en la panteonon de esperantistaj verkistoj.

La plivastismo de amiko José estas pli matura ol la ankoraŭ propagandisma sinteno de Trevor. Ĉu estas tute vera la jena?:

Graham Greene & Esperanto (4): Confidential Agent (film)

Segments of the film Confidential Agent (1945, 118 min.) could once be found on YouTube, and the entire film was once available via the Online Movie Database, but no more. One sequence no longer viewable on YouTube was with Peter Lorre speaking in Entrenationo.

The film cannot at this time be obtained through Netflix, but a DVD does exist; it was released earlier this year and is part of the Warner Archive Collection. Here is a DVD Savant review by Glenn Erickson, 4 May 2011. Here is one paragraph from this review:

Confidential Agent has a number of inspired touches, the most amusing being a pathetic language school where Peter Lorre works. Ian Wolfe has invented an Esperanto-like international language and is convinced that world peace can be achieved if everyone simply learns to talk in the new tongue. Lorre is hilarious, conducting absurd language lessons that will never amount to anything. The scene nails the desperation of an intelligent man working a job that belongs in Alice's Wonderland. Lorre's efforts will also be amusing to language teachers.

In my previous post on Jorge Luis Borges, I connected Borges, the ars combinatoria, and surrealism. As it happens, Breton lists Lull (spellings vary) as a surrealist predecessor at least as early as his Manifesto of Surrealism of 1924. Breton reiterates this in What is Surrealism? ("a lecture given in Brussels on 1st June 1934 at a public meeting organised by the Belgian Surrealists, and issued as a pamphlet immediately afterwards"). Aside: In 1934 you see Breton reiterating his earlier principles but now with a shift of emphasis and concern with the fascist threat.

Here is a literary genre I did not know existed, Bizarro Lit, as reported by Cracked.com. (I presume this web site has its origins in Cracked Magazine, a lesser-known competitor to Mad Magazine in my childhood.) Here we see perverse hybrids of other pulp genres.

This itself is hardly surprising. I cannot fix offhand when explicitly combinatorial or self-conscious genre-bending came into existence, but one can trace this tendency as least as far back as the last third of the 19th century. Consider various movements and genres over the past century and more— 'pataphysics, surrealism, Oulipo, alternate history, steampunk . . . All are outgrowths of certain time periods and social circumstances. Individual authors such as Hermann Hesse and Jorges Luis Borges also come to mind. I think also of Richard Brautigan's genre experiments in the 1970s.

Yet, it seems to me that, for those not entirely immersed in popular culture and its attendant historical amnesia, we live in a markedly retrospective time, returning to and reexamining the past, especially of the 20th and late 19th centuries. We live in a combinatorially self-conscious period. I suppose this is usually termed postmodernism. But whatever you call it, there is a looking backward and a self-conscious comparison with the different presuppositions and norms of the present. I'm guessing this is where steampunk came from. I'm also guessing that the appearance of Esperanto and Volapük in historical and alternate history novels at this time is no accident; this also reflects our self-conscious exploration of the social/cultural past. (I know an English professor and Esperantist who agrees with me on this.)

What we cannot know, if there is to be any future at all, what to look forward to that is qualitatively new. But then, we're in a situation at least partly described by Hegel:

Mi antaŭe raportis pri "Ninieslando", novelo de Howard Waldrop en la antologio Warriors (militistoj) sub redakcio de George R. R. Martin & Gardner Dozois. Estas interese, ke Esperanto lastatempe aperas en historia fikcio, ĉi-kaze fantazia. Mi ne scias, ĉu la "eraroj" ĉi tie estas intencaj tordoj aŭ sciomanko flanke de la aŭtoro. Jen lia erara enkonduko al la historio de Esperanto:

It was one of the ironies of these times that in that far‑off golden summer of 1914, when "some damn fool thing in the Balkans" was leading to its inevitable climax, Tommy's brother Fred, who was then eighteen, had been chosen as a delegate of the Birmingham Working‑Men's Esperanto Association to go as a representative to the Twenty‑fourth Annual Esperanto Conference in Basel, Switzerland. The Esperanto Conference had been to take place in the last days of July and the first days of August. (Fred had been to France before with a gang of school chums and was no stranger to travel.)

The Esperanto Conference was to celebrate the twenty‑fourth anniversary of Zamenhof's artificial language, invented to bring better understanding between peoples through the use of an easy‑to‑learn, totally regular invented language—the thinking being that if all people spoke the same language (recognizing a pre‑Babel dream), they would see that they were all one people, with common dreams and goals, and would slowly lose nationalism and religious partisanship through the use of the common tongue.

There had been other artificial languages since—Volapuk had had quite a few adherents around the turn of the century—but none had had the cachet of Esperanto, the first and best of them.

Arika Okrent and Esther Schor are interviewed, with some attention to the Jewish roots of Zamenhof's creation. Okrent sees the late 19th century as the era of social engineering experiments. Schor discusses Zamenhof's background and motivations, as well as the egalitarian ethic of the Esperanto movement. And of course Incubus is mentioned. Okrent's moral: hand over your language and alow others to ruin its perfection, if you want it to succeed. At the end there's a recording of "The Girl from Ipanema" in Esperanto.

As an appendix, Cox gives us more of Schor's interview beyond the limits of the original broadcast format. She expands on Zamenhof's background, including his early preoccupation with the Jewish question, his desire to reform the Jewish religion, his project to reform Yiddish, his participation in the Zionist movement, projects all eventually abandoned for Esperanto. Schor describes Zamenhof's intervention and strategy for Esperanto in some detail, as well as the growth of the language over the ensuing 122 years. She mentions neologisms in connection with the ability to form compound words. Cox finds it difficult to pin down the motivations of Esperantists. Schor learned Esperanto to undertake her scholarly project; there are diverse motivations for others. She acquits herself very well in her presentation of the Esperanto world. Schor's forthcoming book on Esperanto is announced.

The Esperanto segment of this radio program comprises the first 20 minutes, 30 seconds. The rest concerns the Irish Parliament. This is an exceptionally fair treatment of Esperanto.

In this case, “Ninieslando” begins as what appears to be more historical fiction, particularly a realistic glimpse at trench warfare during World War I. But then the protagonist discovers a secret society based on the principles of the real life artificial language Esperanto and their plan to start a “New World of brotherhood”, and things start to get weird, but in a good way...

In the late 1980s I investigated Antonio Gramsci's views on language including his hostility to the Esperanto movement. On a totally different track, encountering the Gramsci boom in the '90s I developed serious reservations about the transference of Gramsci's notion of organic intellectuals to contemporary circumstances. All of my suspicions were confirmed. I know I've mentioned this here and there but I don't recall writing anything systematic about it. But here are a couple short commentaries:

None of this touches on Gramsci's view of language, but it does suggest my suspicion of organicism. It might relate to Gramsci's treating Esperanto as anathema. I just chanced upon this article:

Gramsci contrasts the progressive, organic character of this process to regressive forms of cultural domination that involve the external imposition of arbitrary, fixed linguistic regimes that serve to displace or repress, rather than integrate, indigenous patterns of language. Hence, for example, his fierce opposition to the naive, technocratic utopianism of those socialists and communists who advocated Esperanto as a means of artificially overcoming the communicative barriers that slowed the fashioning of a unified class consciousness among workers and peasants in different parts of Italy.

Clearly, Gunster understands Esperanto no better than Gramsci did, or why the voluntaristic internationalism of proletarian Esperantists would be an imposition but national cultural unification is not. The balance of the review is not illuminating about any of the ideas discussed. I cannot draw any conclusions about Ives based on Gunster's useless review.

At first glance there is a striking similarity between Adorno's evocation of a post-lapsarian utopia and the universal language topos that accompanied early cinema. [27] The parallel logic in what one could call the Esperantist conception of the cinema is evident, for example, in D. W. Griffith's claim in a 1921 interview that "A picture is the universal symbol, and a picture that moves is a universal language. Moving pictures, someone suggests, 'might have saved the situation when the Tower of Babel was built.' " [28] Just as cinema was heralded as a transparent, unproblematically accessible (because visual) alternative to national languages, an analogous discourse of democratization and univocal, natural signs accompanied the prehistory and invention of the phonograph. During the first half of the nineteenth century, phonography—defined in the OED as "a system of phonetic shorthand invented by Isaac Pitman in 1837"—was heralded as a "natural method of writing" [29] and was arduously defended by worker's groups as a means of making writing more widely accessible. [30] In the same vein, the "phonautographe," invented by Léon Scott de Martinville in 1857, was an attempt to produce, as the machine's subtitle explained, an "Apparatus for the Self-Registering of the Vibrations of Sound." The resulting "natural stenography" would be, according to the title of Scott's book on the subject, sound writing itself. [31] Illiteracy would thus be eliminated by substituting hearing and speaking for reading and writing. Indeed, one of the most popular uses of the early phonographs—which, one should recall, could both play and record—was acoustic correspondence. The "phono-post" speaking postcards, which one recorded and sent through the mails, made writing superfluous, a fact stressed by advertisements that invited potential users to drop their dictionaries and "Speak! Don't write any more! Listen!"

Unlike the visual Esperanto of the cinema, however, the possibility of universal language held out by the gramophone is just that: only a possibility, a hope. While the traces of the gramophone are just as indexical as the cinematic signifiers, they are not, as Adorno is careful to point out, readily intelligible like photographs. Rather, they are both indexical and enigmatic. In this regard they can claim both of the contradictory qualities of the hieroglyph: "universal" and "immediate" by virtue of their "natural," necessary relation of sign to referent, and also esoteric, recondite and requiring decoding, due to their surface inaccessibility. [32] Phonograph records are, to quote an astonishing early anticipation of Adorno's techno-cryptogrammic characterization, "cabalistic photographs [by means of which] sound can outlive itself, leave a posthumous trace, but in the form of hieroglyphs which not everyone can decipher." [33] Despite their shared millenarian formulations, the universal language rhetoric accompanying early cinema is thus far indeed from the post-Babelian figure employed by Adorno in his recuperation of gramophonic reification by means of what is almost a theology of indexicality. The latter must be located, rather, in a very different tradition: the hieroglyphics of nature articulated in German romanticism and, in particular, as mediated by Walter Benjamin.

OK, most of this will be impenetrable gobbledegook to most of you, though it fits in to my research interests. But note that the universal language idea became popular for the first time in the 19th century, and as a master metaphor persisted into the early 20th century. The popular universal interest in a universal language dovetails with various media, symbolic codes, notations, etc. that could function as "universal languages". Of course, people still use the word "Esperanto" neutrally, positively, or pejoratively in a metaphorical sense, but we're in a different era. I wonder if it was the 1930s that killed off this earlier sensibility, both metaphorically as well as literally.

I really loved writing it, but in terms of complexity it was beyond anything I'd done before. It's like a bar bet: write a novel about Sigmund Freud, Esperanto, and the Warsaw Ghetto — oh, and throw a dybbuk into it. But the love story ties everything together.

There is an interesting web site hailing out of Britain called Jewdas, subtitled "radical voices for the alternative diaspora". The contributors tout a countercultural version of Jewishness as an alternative to both Zionism and traditional religiosity. There is much of interest here, but for our purposes, I call your attention to this essay:

The Big Ethnic Love-In by Baruch Trotsky

Mr. Trotsky is skeptical about some contemporary propaganda in favor of Jewish "peoplehood", deeming it a dubious ideological metaphysical concept as problematic as nationalism or race. More importantly, he delves into the actual diversity and hybridity of real Jewish history and existence, and wonders what a unifying conception of Jewishness could possibly be. The readers' responses are also quite interesting, and in the process, the delineation of the question becomes refined.

Interestingly, this very question was debated over a century ago when a definable ethnic culture or meta-culture was easy to pinpoint, though even then the defining criteria of peoplehood proved to be elusive in the case of the Jews. One very interesting intervention, which is not brought into historical specialist or popular discussion as much as it should be, was that of L.L. Zamenhof, whose claim to fame is the creation of Esperanto, but who also went through a fascinating evolution in his engagement with the Jewish question perplexing Eastern European Jews. Zamenhof was an early proponent of Zionism, first recommending a settlement in the USA, later ceding to the Palestine option, and eventually categorically rejecting the whole project. Zamenhof also published a project for the reform and standardization of Yiddish, also later abandoned.

Ultimately, Zamenhof set his hopes on the reform of the Jewish religion itself, in a doctrine he called Hilelismo. Here he makes his most forceful arguments, mercilessly demystifying the notion of Jewish peoplehood, while posing the very questions now being asked in an entirely different historical situation. Hilelismo was not Zamenhof's final formulation.While he sought to bring Eastern European Jewry into the 20th century, creating a modern people out of a "pseudo-people" nostalgic for a religion and a homeland it could no longer believe in (or at least the intelligentsia could not), Zamenhof generalized his religious reform program to include all who wanted to participate in a universal, common alternative religious practice, while recognizing or maintaining their inherited religious traditions if they so chose in a non-absolutist, non-theistic fashion, somewhat akin to Ethical Culture or Unitarianism. He dubbed his revised religious doctrine Homaranismo (not strictly translatable, but meaning considering oneself a member of humanity) which, along with his thinking about Jews and about Esperanto itself, continued to develop until his death in 1917.

This interview with Gabriel Kuhn, a scholar of anarchism and Gustav Landauer, amplifies on Landauer's irrationalism I alleged in my previous post. And Landauer's primitivist, organicist, mystical tendency is exemplified in his attitude toward Esperanto:

DN: Difference is a key word for Landauer. For example he vehemently opposes Esperanto for trying to unite humanity with one language. He makes an almost Tower of Babelesque critique.

GK: That’s a good example of Landauer’s opposition to rationalist measures of bringing people together. I guess Esperanto was to him a cold, mechanical idea of providing some kind of common structure of finding one another. Rather, people best do so through cherishing their own cultural traditions, expressions and language.

The idea of a homogenous socialist utopia was not something that appealed to him. If you’re not able to embrace all cultural forms that human kind has produced: you cannot embrace all of human kind, you cannot establish socialism. His idea of difference goes beyond a mere concept of tolerance. Socialism has to ‘grow’, that’s a word that appears often in his writings, it has to grow from the diversity of human beings and cultures that make up humanity.

Landauer himself vehemently opposed any use of Esperanto. See his essay “Lernt nicht esperanto!” in Die Freie Generation, November 1907, translated and published in an anthology of Landauer's writings:

This essay is a rejoinder to Pierre Ramus, who advocated Esperanto in the October 1907 issue. Ramus responded to Landauer. Landauer never altered his view. In April 1917 he lauded Martin Buber for "opposing a Dutch initiative demanding the establishment of an International Academy to develop a common global language."

In this essay, Landauer makes two main points, one characteristic of his reactionary mystical philosophy, another far less ridiculous. Landauer counterposes the natural and the artificial, the latter being equated with the state, an artificial monstrosity that obstructs the voluntary union of humanity. Esperanto is thus by analogy a repressive instrument akin to the state. Landauer condemns uniformity in favor of diversity. Apparently, he would not be convinced by the advocacy of Esperanto as an auxiliary, second common language.

Landauer also argues that artificial creations lack the capacity to generate novelty, that they can only regurgitate old thoughts. Furthermore, artificial languages lack nuance, and lack a relationship to the tacit and unspoken that accompanies all communication.

This leads in to this more interesting objection: that Esperanto would be dangerous for practical communication because the commonality of linguistic form disguises the lack of commonality of intended meaning. Landauer argues that a French Esperantist really thinks in French, a German Esperantist in German, etc. Better people should be consciously aware of their inability to communicate than to suppose they do when they don't. The only communication that is possible is shallow and banal, nothing beneath the surface could ever be communicated. And again, Landauer stresses the importance of nonverbal communication.

This does raise a genuine question, but with the dogmatic assumption that the potential obstacles are insurmountable, that no social stabilization of meaning has ever come about or nuance expressed. In 1907 the language was still in its infancy, or perhaps its adolescence, but clearly there was real communication, and already a body of translated and even original literature. The first international conference had taken place in 1905. Esperanto had already penetrated into China and Japan. I suspect there is a lack of sustantive documentation on the extent to which cultural differences and linguistic interference may have caused problems, but it is wrong to assume that such problems are insurmountable.

The anarchist movement has always been all over the place philosophically and ideologically. I regard it as incurably backward and childish, but I do credit it for giving much more serious attention and support to Esperanto than any other tendency within the socialist camp. Anarchists have generally been supportive of Esperanto, so Landauer may have been an anomaly, and his attitude may have been connected to irrationalist or organicist tendencies one finds elsewhere as well. This may be true of the communist Antonio Gramsci, who opposed Esperanto when it became popular in the Italian working class movement following the first world war.

Strangled Cries: A profile of poet Julius Balbin by Alexander Kharkovsky

This is an interview with Holocaust survivor, Esperantist, and poet Julius Balbin, with samples of his poetry, which he wrote in both English and Esperanto, largely about his experiences in Nazi concentration camps.

I met Balbin at least once, I think it was at an Esperanto meeting in New York City in 1987. I had been forwarned that he was moody, but in fact on this occasion he was quite jovial. At this meeting he recited from some sketch he had written about Esperanto grammar and was quite humorous.

Balbin was invited to participate in a symposium on Esperanto and the Holocaust on December 5, 1995 at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, organized by the Esperanto Society of Washington, but it turned out that he was unable to make it.

Above all let me suggest that throughout the countries of Europe an international language should be one of the compulsory subjects of study. Such international languages (Esperanto, Ido) have already attained something very near perfection; and with the minimum of effort the international language could be mastered by all the children of the civilised world. Not merely would this language be of unrivalled practical value throughout life. It would further serve as an introduction to the study of foreign languages and of their own national tongue; for it would make them realise, far better than any express instruction, the common elements in the European languages and the unity of European thought."

Esperanto in anarchist schools

While I do not think very highly of the intellectual culture of anarchism, anarchists made an undeniable contribution in radical education. Esperanto often featured prominently in their offerings. Here is one example.

I would argue that many of the anarchist schools at the beginning of the twentieth century were at least as teacher-centred as the progressive schools. La Ruche, Sébastien Faure’s school at Rambouillet in France, much admired by Emma Goldman (1907: 390ff.) had the following timetable:

La afero de Onfray ekzempligas diferencojn inter naciaj ideologiaj/filozofiaj kulturoj, kvankam individuoj ne ĉiukaze enkorpigas la dominantan mensokadron de propra nacia kulturo.
